Although the immediate impact that these small-scale electric vessels will have on global greenhouse gas emissions might be limited, the vessel holds significance as it provides crucial technical and operational insights that can inform the development of larger-scale electric vessels in the future.
A hydrofoil vessel uses wing-like structures (hydrofoils) beneath its hull to lift it out of the water at high speeds, reducing drag and energy consumption.
The Hydroglyder, an all-electric crew transfer vessel, was developed by YGT in collaboration with marine engineering firms Lift Ocean and Zeabuz.
This aligns with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore's goal for all new harbor craft operating in the port to be fully electric, capable of using B100 biofuel or zero carbon fuels by 2030.
In September, YGT's subsidiary MarinEV also began commercial trials of a fully electric light cargo vessel in Singapore.
