Simultaneous operations (SIMOPs) involve refuelling ships with bunker fuel while they are unloading cargo. This method helps to reduce vessels' docking time in port.
Hapag-Lloyd’s container ship Hanoi Express recently received a record 10,000 cbm (4,470 mt) of LNG at Hong Kong’s Kwai Tsing Container Terminals under such operations.
The LNG was supplied through a collaboration between electricity provider CLPe and oil and gas company CNOOC Guangdong Water Transport Clean Energy Company (CNOOC), using CNOOC’s bunker vessel Haiyang Shiyou 301.
This was the first ship-to-ship (STS) LNG bunkering with SIMOPs in Hong Kong and also the largest single LNG bunkering operation ever conducted in the port, according to CLPe.
In November 2024, CLPe and CNOOC had announced plans to form a joint venture to offer LNG bunkering services in Hong Kong.
