Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT), part of port operating company APM Terminals, has signed a power purchase agreement with the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) and Egypt's New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) to source 100% of its electricity from renewable electricity.

The agreement follows more than two years of collaboration between SCCT, SCZONE, the Ministry of Electricity, represented by NREA, and EgyptERA.

Once implemented, the switch to solar and wind power is expected to eliminate approximately 30,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually by replacing fossil fuel-based grid electricity, according to APM Terminals.

The company said 62% of the electricity used across its global terminal portfolio already comes from renewable sources, with the latest agreement marking another step towards its target of reaching 100% renewable electricity by 2030.

APM Terminals has not disclosed when the renewable electricity supply will begin or provided any additional details about the agreement.
