Australian energy firm Woodside Energy has produced its first batch of grey ammonia at its 1.1 million mt/year ammonia project in Beaumont, Texas.

The production started following the completion of systems testing, marking the “first phase of operational commissioning” at the facility, Woodside said.

It is expected that the plant will begin producing blue ammonia in 2026. But the start-up of blue ammonia production will depend on the availability of “carbon-abated” hydrogen and the operational readiness of ExxonMobil’s carbon capture facility, the company noted earlier.

Last year, Woodside Energy’s vice president, Rick Beuttel, told ENGINE that ammonia produced at the Beaumont facility would be available for bunkering, alongside other sectors.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin next year and continue through the year. Woodside added that it is also pursuing additional supply agreements, including for blue ammonia.
