Changes in Rotterdam's bio-bunker sales between the second and third quarters of 2025:

  • Bio-VLSFO sales down by 53,000 mt to 122,000 mt
  • Bio-HSFO sales down by 15,000 mt to 24,000 mt
  • Total bio-MGO sales up by 9,000 mt to 25,000 mt
  • Bio-ULSFO sales up by 4,000 mt to 28,000 mt
  • Bio-methanol sales down by 1,600 mt to 2,400 mt
  • Bio-LNG sales down from 2,100 mt to 400 mt

Rotterdam’s bio-bunker sales rose to 201,000 mt in the third quarter of 2025, the Port of Rotterdam’s data shows.

That was a 18% increase from the second quarter, and a 45% jump from the same quarter last year.

Meanwhile, bio-bunker sales have decreased by 24% between the first three quarters of last year and the same period this year.

Bio-bunker sales are made up of liquid biofuels blended into any of the conventional bunker grades (VLSFO, HSFO, MGO and ULSFO), as well as bio-methanol and bio-LNG. They can be pure bio products like B100 biofuel, or bio-fossil blends like B30-VLSFO.

Bio-VLSFO sales rose 78% during the quarter and made up 60% of all bio-bunker sales at the port. That share has increased from 40% in the second quarter.

Bio-ULSFO was the second most popular bio-blend during the third quarter, selling around 28,000 mt, which was up by 15% from the second quarter.

Meanwhile, bio-MGO sales recorded a decline, falling by 27% to 25,000 mt. But this was still a whooping 107% more than the third quarter of 2024.

Bio-HSFO sales fell by 38% on the quarter to 24,000 mt.

A total of 2,400 mt of bio-methanol was also bunkered at the port, down from 4,000 mt supplied in the second quarter.

Bio-LNG sales slumped to just 400 mt in the third quarter, compared to 2,100 mt bunkered in the previous quarter.

Overall, bio-bunker sales made up around 8% of all fuel sales in Rotterdam.
