The disruption at the major coal export facility adds to issues already plaguing bunker operations around the Cape of Good Hope.
Richards Bay is one of the four bunkering locations in South Africa, the others being Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.
Algoa Bay was previously South Africa’s main bunkering hub, but the government suspended operations there nearly two years ago.
That suspension, along with vessel diversions caused by Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, has boosted demand at Richards Bay, other South African ports, and nearby hubs like Nacala and Maputo in Mozambique, Walvis Bay in Namibia, and Port Louis in Mauritius.
