UK bunker tanker cleared to carry B100 in industry first

Rotterdam

HBE-rebated B30-VLSFO and B30-LSMGO prices in Rotterdam have climbed by $22/mt and $30/mt, respectively. Their gains have been driven by sharp increases in both conventional bunker fuel and POMEME feedstock prices.

ENGINE’s conventional VLSFO benchmark in Rotterdam has gained $19/mt over the past week and LSMGO has surged by $31/mt.

Adding to the upward pressure, Prima’s POMEME CIF ARA barge price has jumped $50/mt higher. A $7/mt rise in Prima Markets’ HBE rebate for B30 blends has helped limit further gains.

Rotterdam’s B30-VLSFO and B30-LSMGO UCOME grades have surged $28/mt and $37/mt higher in the past week, drawing support from a $50/mt rise in Prima-assessed UCOME FOB ARA barge price.

B30-VLSFO UCOME was indicated at $880/mt in the Port of Lisbon earlier this week, carrying an $80/mt premium over ARA levels on the day. In contrast, the grade was indicated at $787/mt in Gibraltar, a $13/mt discount to ARA.

Singapore

B24-VLSFO UCOME and B24-LSMGO UCOME prices in Singapore have increased by $14–18/mt over the past week.

Prima’s UCOME cargo price for FOB China has remained unchanged, but $18–24/mt rises in Singapore’s VLSFO and LSMGO benchmarks have contributed to the gains.

ENGINE’s freight estimate for UCOME shipments from China to Singapore has declined by $1/mt.

Other bio-bunker news

HBE-rebated B100 was offered in a range of $1,045–1,160/mt in Amsterdam earlier this week. Lead times for B100 deliveries are recommended at 7–10 days, a source told ENGINE.

Argentina has authorised voluntary use of biofuels or biofuel blends for river and sea vessels, as long as their engines are compatible. To support this, the government has introduced a new “Bunker Operator” category in its official registry. Companies supplying marine biofuels must now register and follow certain rules for proper handling, safety and fuel quality.

A conventional bunker tanker operated by UK-based John H. Whitaker has received a Lloyd’s Register certification to carry 100% FAME-based biofuel (B100) within UK coastal waters. The certification sets a “credible and commercially viable path” for other tankers to apply for B100 approval without needing conversion to full chemical tanker status, LR’s Tim Wilson said.

A BIMCO subcommittee will develop a new clause on biofuel use in time-charter agreements. It will define biofuel standards and clarify supply and handling requirements to ensure regulatory compliance, BIMCO said.
