Bunkering in the port of Hong Kong
The Port of Hong Kong is situated on the Kowloon Peninsula off the South China Sea and is controlled by the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Board (HKMPB), which was established in 2016.
It continues to serve as a major hub port catering to the South Asian Pacific region, and is a crucial entry port for the Chinese mainland. It is one of the busiest container ports in the world. It handled almost 7 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers in 2022 across its nine container terminals, according to HKMPB data.
Owing to its strategic location, influx of container ships and typically competitive bunker fuel pricing, it has been as a major bunkering hub as well. Suppliers can often price VLSFO at parity with other Asian hubs, including Singapore.
However, the port is vulnerable to adverse weather conditions and typhoons. These factors often disrupt services in the port. In fact, there are a total of 14 typhoon shelters for vessels in the port.
