Fuel Switch Snapshot: B100 and LBM continue to make sense for intra-EU voyages with pooling

Rotterdam’s B100 more than $100/mt cheaper than HSFO

LBM at $143-189/mt discounts to fossil LNG

All bunker prices mentioned below have been adjusted for calorific contents to make them VLSFO-equivalent. They have estimated EU-EU voyage compliance costs included for Rotterdam, and non-EU-EU compliance costs included for Singapore. These account for EU ETS costs and FuelEU Maritime penalties, and our estimated compliance surplus values for FuelEU pooling. Rotterdam's B100 and LBM prices also factor in Dutch HBE rebates for advanced liquid and gaseous biofuels sold in the Netherlands.

B100 (100% biofuel) is now $138/mt cheaper than VLSFO, and $233/mt cheaper than LSMGO, for ships bunkering in Rotterdam and consuming the B100 on voyages between EU ports. For scrubber-fitted vessels, B100 is now $104/mt cheaper than HSFO.

Rotterdam's LNG is $189/mt more expensive than LBM when consumed on vessels with Otto medium speed (Otto MS) engines between two EU ports, and $143/mt costlier for vessels with diesel slow speed (diesel SS) engines.

Liquid fuels

Rotterdam’s VLSFO price - with EU-EU voyages costs included - has declined by $18/mt over the past week. Prompt VLSFO supply remains tight across Rotterdam and the wider ARA region, with recommended lead times of 8-10 days.

B100 has dropped by $16/mt over the same period. The outright VLSFO-equivalent price for the grade has gone up by $3/mt, but when we add the increase in our estimated potential FuelEU Maritime pooling value for EU-EU voyages, the price has moved down.

Singapore’s VLSFO price has fallen by $22/mt over the past week. Availability has improved in the port, with lead times shortening from 6–18 days to 7–10 days.

Liquid gases

Rotterdam’s LNG bunker price has remained largely stable, rising by just $3/mt over the past week. A fall in the underlying Dutch TTF Natural Gas contract has been countered by a rise in LNG bunker delivery premiums.

The bunker delivery premium for LNG delivered in the ARA has gone up by $0.23/MMBtu ($12/mt) on the week, to $2.38/MMBtu ($124/mt), according to prices gathered and assessed by ENGINE.

Singapore’s LNG bunker prices has made a moderate decline of $5/mt over the past week. Singapore’s price has declined amid a $0.12/MMBtu ($6/mt) drop in ENGINE’s assessed bunker delivery premium, which has fallen to $2.12/MMBtu ($110/mt).
