RSP, a joint venture between Dutch electricity supplier Eneco and the Port of Rotterdam, will build and manage the shore power facilities. ECT and the Port of Rotterdam Authority will handle the integration of these facilities at the quay and terminal site.
The first vessel is expected to connect to shore power by 2028, according to the port authority. ECT operates two terminals in the port. Once these facilities become fully operational at both terminals by 2030, ECT claims that around 5,000 sea-going vessels will be able to use shore power each year.
Shore power has been gaining traction across ports and ship operators globally because it helps to reduce emissions while a ship is berthed.
According to the classification society DNV, there are currently 118 facilities across ports globally that offer shore power connectivity to vessels, with 47 more planned and four under discussion.
